October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. Did you know that in Canada, about 74 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each day?   In fact, it is estimated that this year, 26,900 women and 230 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  These are women (and men) of all ages. We all know someone who has or has had the disease, and we all know that it affects not just the patient, but everyone who cares about them too. For more information about breast cancer, please see the Canadian Cancer Society’s website.

At DeerFields, our Women’s Health Team partners with our female clients of all ages to help them understand their risks, optimize their health, identify any health concerns early, review their treatment options, and obtain the best possible care — whether at our clinic, or other clinics or care centres in the Greater Toronto Area. Our medical and health team routinely counsels women about the lifestyle choices they can make to reduce their risk of developing breast and other cancers, as well as other diseases. To reduce your risk for breast cancer, you should consider:

  • Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink or avoiding it altogether.
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Being physically active
  • Talking to your doctor about the benefits and risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy
  • Being a non-smoker and avoiding second-hand smoke
  • Avoiding environmental toxins
  • Breastfeeding

At DeerFields, our Women’s Health Team understands that women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer (whether recently or even decades earlier), often require support in coming to terms with the diagnosis and its impact on their lives and the lives of their families. Many women are fearful of treatment or of a return of the disease; many women want to optimize every aspect of their health during and after treatment; some benefit from health and life coaching during or even years later, wanting to acknowledge their disease but not let it define them. If you’re one of these women or know someone who is, we have the team and expertise to support you. In fact, we’re so convinced that our Women’s Health Team will be the perfect for you, that we invite you to book a Complimentary Consultation — to meet the team and to discuss your health and lifestyle interests.
