03 Dec Walk more for a major health boost
Walking offers so many health benefits, it’s no wonder many physicians are prescribing it to patients. In fact, some experts suggests walking more, is the single best thing most Canadians can do to improve their health.
Research has proven that a commitment to regular walking (aim for at least 10,000 steps a day) can help:
- Prevent heart disease
- Reduce the risk of stroke
- Make us happier
- Lower blood pressure
- Manage stress
- Lead to better posture
- Maintain healthy cholesterol levels
- Reduce the risk of many cancers
- Boost bone density
- Burn calories
- Improve our mental health
- Save us time and money
- Reduce vehicle congestion and emissions
- Reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attacks
- Give us more energy
- Reconnect us with nature
Many experts believe sitting is the new smoking and that our sedentary lifestyles are making us sick, perhaps taking years off our lives. Research also suggests that an hour of dedicated exercise time each day, while beneficial to our health, does not counter being sedentary the rest of the day. Walk some or all of the way to school or work; walk on breaks and at lunch; choose walking meetings with colleagues; enjoy a walk as a family after dinner; and walk to do errands in your community.
